Save Our Safety Net Reality Tour
Over 200 of the District’s residents crowded the halls of the Wilson Building for the Save Our Safety Net(SOS) Reality Tour on May 18th from 11am to 1pm. The goal of the tour was to show the council that the residents do care about services that could be possibly be cut under the FY 2012 budget. Because they could not bring the councilmembers to the people, they brought the people to the front door of the council members’ offices. The final budget will be voted on May 24th.

WASHINGTON, DC—National Nurses United announced today that Registered Nurses at Washington Hospital Center voted Friday and Saturday to ratify a new contract with their employer.

Jews United for Justice Labor Seder brought community together for faith, fellowship, and culture
On April 10, 2011, 330 people gathered at Adas Israel congregation in Washington DC for Jews United with Justice (JUFJ)’s annual Labor Seder. This was the tenth year that JUFJ presented its Labor Seder and the theme was “everyone deserves a good job”. The Seder combined religion, social justice issues, songs, and fellowship so that everyone who attended felt involved. A Seder is a ceremonial dinner that commemorates the Jewish exodus from Egypt and includes the reading of the Haggadah and the eating of symbolic foods.

Hundreds rally at Giant in Greenbelt to Support Teamsters
Sunday, March 13, 2011 hundreds of people gathered at the Beltway Plaza in Greenbelt, Maryland to show their support for Teamster Locals 639, 730, 863, and 922. The Teamsters are trying to prevent Giant and C&S Grocers from outsourcing warehouse jobs . This would leave 600 family supporting jobs in our community without work.
Washington Hospital Center Nurses Call One-Day Strike
Registered nurses at Washington D.C.’s largest hospital, Washington Hospital Center, announced plans for a one-day walkout on Friday, March 4.
The strike announcement follows negotiation sessions Thursday, Friday and Monday that the nurses say produced insufficient progress toward resolving the RNs’ primary conce
s regarding serious patient safety problems and nursing standards at the hospital.
