CEO of VMT Solanges Vivens is one of seven nominees for for Scrooge of the Year because, according to her nominator, “she used taxpayer funds to fight workers in District-owned nursing homes. She’s made herself rich on the backs of indigent seniors and hardworking, underpaid caregivers”.Scrooge of the year award is given annually to a person or company that has done dastardly deeds to workers in the District of Columbia.
November 12th benefit concert for National Day Labor Organizing Network a success
On November 12th We Are Family and Positive Force held a benefit concert for the National Day Labor Organizing Network (NDLON). D.C. artist Ted Leo and the Pharmacist performed to a crowd of 1,000 people at Sacred Heart church.
Social Justice organizations, such as D.C. Jobs with Justice, STITCH, SOA Watch and NDOLN tabled at the event giving information to the concert attendees.

Caregivers urge DC government to take action
Employees of Unique Residential Care Center voted 165-0 to join Service Employees Inte
ational Union (SEIU) Local 1199 in February of 2010. More than a year later, they still do not have a contract. This is because of the company VMT which manages Unique Residential Center. VMT’s sole CEO Solange Vivens has refused to come to the table and bargain for a fair contract for the workers.

CWA members continue to push for a good contract
Although the strike is over members of the Communications Worker of America (CWA)are still struggling to secure a fair contract with corporate giant Verizon. Some of the cuts that Verizon is trying to make to the workers contracts include: freezing pensions for active employees and eliminating them for new workers, slashing disability benefits for workers injured on the job, and imposing health care payments of up to $6,800 on active employees.

ational Union (SEIU) Local 500, Union representatives, and DC Jobs with Justice formed a delegation to the DC Department of Employment Services. The purpose of the delegation was to file complaints against employers who are not paying the Living Wage to their employees.
Labor in the Pulpits this weekend!
More than a 50 local congregations will celebrate workers this weekend as part of the annual Labor in the Pulpits and Labor on the Bimah programs.
