CWA Kicks Off Connect-DC Campaign at Verizon Center

DC Jobs with Justice activists joined members of the Communications Workers of America on Tuesday, December 11th at a rally in front of the Verizon Center to kick off the Connect-DC campaign. Donning red hats and signs saying “Keep Good Jobs in DC,” the 50 plus protesters sent a message to Verizon that their customers and employees in DC will no longer tolerate being treated as second-class.
Connect-DC, a collaboration of DC JwJ and CWA, is calling on Verizon to:r
DC SLAP Represents in Miami
Wearing bright yellow t-shirts reading “Burger King exploits farmworkers,” over 1,500 members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW)and their allies – including DC-based leaders and activists — marched through Miami last Friday, November 30, to demand that Burger King work with the CIW to raise farmworker wages and address sweatshop conditions in the fields.

DC JwJ Honors Our Allies at Fifth Annual “I’ll Be There” Awards
On Thursday November 8th DC JwJ held our Fifth Annual “I’ll Be There” Awards, where we honor labor and community allies for outstanding solidarity. The event was held at the Samuel Gompers’ room at the AFL-CIO, with Gloria Minott of WPFW serving as Master of Ceremonies. Over 150 labor, community, faith and student activists attended, and DC JwJ raised over $10,000 to support our work over the coming year. This year’s honorees included Karen Minatelli of the DC Employment Justice Center, Prof.
Clergy lead delegation supporting security officers
On November 8th, religious and community leaders joined security officers for a delegation to confront representatives of a major property-management company about the low wages workers in their buildings receive. Workers from the Admiral and Allied-Barton company were joined by Rev. Louise Green of All Soul’s Unitarian Church, Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, Rev.
GW STUDENTS COOK-OUT TO KICK COKE
Order up: burgers and hot dogs, hold the coke.
The George Washington (GW) Progressive Student Union held a cook-out and petition drive Tuesday to demand that GW dump Coca-Cola and switch to local vendors who respect worker and environmental rights. Over 100 students pledged support for the campaign and also agreed to stop purchasing Coca-Cola products.

More than 50 churches and synagogues across the DC Metro area will be holding special programs and services this weekend and later in September as part of the Labor in the Pulpits and Labor on the Bimah programs.
