ight road trip to Providence, Rhode Island where more than 1000 labor, community, student, and religious activists from across the United States and the world gathered for the annual Jobs with Justice conference which took place May 2-4.

Faith Communities Support Health Care for Grocery Workers
In response to news that Safeway and Giant were trying to cut back health and pension benefits for 23,000 grocery workers in DC, MD and VA represented by the UFCW Local 400, local faith leaders sprung into action. In addition to spreading the word to their congregations, members of Interfaith Worker Justice of Greater Washington led a delegation to a Safeway store and delivered a letter to the manager. “Members of our congregations shop at these stores,†Rev. Kay Johnson of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in DC told the manager at the Dupont Circle Safeway.
Students Rally for Farmworker Justice
Students from universities across DC picketed in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ campaign for better wages and working conditions outside the K St NW Burger King Wednesday.

Indian Guest Workers Stop in DC to Demand Just Immigration Policy.
As the Bush Administration pushes an expansion of the guest worker program, 64 Indian guestworkers who mortgaged their futures for the American dream only to find out they had paid $20,000 for an American nightmare, are touring around the country to demand a just immigration policy. DC Jobs with Justice is honoured to have been able to host the workers from the New Orleans Workers Center here in Washington DC and support their quest for justice.

Safeway, Giant Workers WIN Contract
Today, nearly 20,000 grocery store workers, from DC to Baltimore, won raises, affordable health care and pensions. The contract, approved overwhelmingly by Safeway and Giant employees, provides significant wage increases that will total $2.82 an hour over the life of the contract for the 70% of the workers who are at the top of the wage scale. Starting wages for new hires have also increased, with an accelerated pay scale so the new workers can ea
more, faster.
