Immigrant Rights Victory! DC Council Says No to Secure Communities.
As a result of the effort of DC Jobs with Justice and local activists from the DC Immigrant Rights Coalition, on Tuesday May 8th, 2012 the DC Council on the Judiciary voted the Immigrant Detainer Compliance Amendment Act of 2011 out of committee.

WHAT: Rally at Roadside Development, one of the largest development firms in the DC region, demanding them to stop protecting the construction company Wings Enterprises, a company known for their violations of labor laws and OSHA regulations.

On Friday, members of DC Jobs with Justice, La Union de Trabajadores, NDLON and our DC based allies went to offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to send the message that cosmetic reforms to Secure Communities is not an acceptable response. As Congressman Luis Gutierrez put it it, “Only the federal gove
ment can tu
a $50 traffic violation into a broken family be deporting a parent.”
Stay tuned as we continue to push for progressive immigration reform, by limiting the police’s ability to interfere in immigration matters.

Verizon and Walmart battled it out for the top spot of Scrooge of the Year!
Verizon was declared the winner of the Scrooge of the Year contest at the DC Jobs with Justice Winter Cabaret on December 10th. The Scrooge of the Year is a company or person who has done dastardly deeds to workers in Washington, D.C..
Some of the other nominees were Solanges Vivens, Liberty Maritime, Capital Grille, Daycon Products,John Hill,Gove
or Scott Walker, and Walmart.
Who will be the scrooge of the year? Will be it Solanges Vivens, Walmart, Verizon, or many more?!
CEO of VMT Solanges Vivens is one of seven nominees for for Scrooge of the Year because, according to her nominator, “she used taxpayer funds to fight workers in District-owned nursing homes. She’s made herself rich on the backs of indigent seniors and hardworking, underpaid caregivers”.Scrooge of the year award is given annually to a person or company that has done dastardly deeds to workers in the District of Columbia.
