Just Hours

Just Hours   DC residents are rising up for just hours and fair schedules   CHECK OUT THE JUST HOURS CAMPAIGN WEBSITE AT DCJUSTHOURS.ORG With the DC minimum wage set to rise to $11.50 by 2016, more than 40,000 workers will see a crucial boost to their wages. Yet wage increases alone cannot turn low-wage jobs into middle class ones. For many District residents – especially those working in retail, food service, and custodial jobs – getting enough hours to make ends meet and having fair, transparent schedules are just as important. Because our residents need enough hours and stable schedules to provide for their families, DC Jobs With Justice is leading a “Just Hours” campaign to transform service sector jobs into jobs with just hours and fair scheduling.   Read more about the campaign for Just Hours and fair schedules: The next labor fight is over when you work, not how much you make, Washington Post, May 8th New Political Debates Brewing Over Worker Schedules, The Kojo Nnamdi Show, May 19th Have We Seen the End of the 8-Hour Day?, The Nation, May 11th As San Francisco wages rise, conversation turns to enforcement, Al Jazeera, May...

District Coalition For Better Transit

The District Coalition For Better Transit is a movement to keep transit safe, reliable, affordable, and PUBLIC. The DC government is planning to hand over our buses to a private, for-profit corporation with no connection to the District. Privatization is a step back to the past before WMATA, when private bus service was so ineffective, it had to be transferred to the public. Privatization didn’t work then and it won’t work now. It’s bad for riders and it’s bad for workers. The District Coalition for Better Transit brings together riders, workers, and residents of DC to fight against the privatization of our public transit. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is planning to privatize at least 10 non-regional lines currently operated by WMATA and to expand the privately-run Circulator. The non-regional bus lines are those that are funded only by our tax dollars here in DC and run within the border of the District. The Circulator, operated by a private contractor, provides service primarily to the most affluent neighborhoods in the city, while profiting off DC public subsidies. Privatization of bus lines not only risks living wage paying union jobs, but it also jeopardizes reliable and safe service to all DC residents. We are calling for safe and affordable transit for all of the District, not a two-tiered system catering to high-income...

Verizon Solidarity

Holding the Line for Good Jobs at Verizon 45,000 Communication Workers of America (CWA) members have been in bitter contract negotiations against communication giant Verizon. Verizon has been demanding deep concessions from its workers, including freezing pensions for active employees and eliminating them for new workers, slashing disability benefits for workers injured on the job, and imposing health care payments of up to $6,800 on active employees. CWA members struck during the month of August after their contract expired. They are back at the table, but DC JwJ is organizing community support to keep pressure on Verizon to settle a fair contract and preserve these good jobs. Alms for the rich street...
