Between June 22-26, tens of thousands of people will once again gather in Detroit for the second US Social Forum under the banner, “Another World is Possible, Another US is necessary.” The forum comes on the heels of the Greater DC People’s Assembly which took place this past weekend. rnrnAmong the hundreds of workshops featured, is “Keeping Your Services Off the Chopping Block: the Nuts and Bolts of Building Labor-Community Alliances to Protect Public Services” co-organized by Jobs with Justice and the American Federation of Government Employees.rnAs unemployment rates continue to rise in areas throughout the US, and people continue to lose their homes in what constitutes the largest loss of land for people of color since the end of reconstruction, the safety net across the nations is crumbling. Using budget shortfalls as an excuse, local governments have moved to de-fund badly needed public services, selling off the public sector to private interests, and rolling back wages and labor protections for workers. rnrnThroughout the country labor-community coalitions have emerged not only to fight back against the privatization of public resources, but also to provide alternatives for filling the budget gap. This workshop is just one of hundreds of opportunities to showcase some of the struggles currently taking place, share best practices and reinvigorate your organizing.rnrnDC Jobs with Justice will be organizing a bus delegation from DC to Detroit. The bus will depart DC Tuesday, June 22nd at 7AM and return on June 26th, time TBA.
