On May 3, 2012, corporate giant Verizon held its annual meeting of shareholders in Huntsville, Alabama. Verizon still has not negotiated a fair contract with its workers who are members of the Communication Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). Activist and CWA members rallied in Huntsville in a strong show of support. Locally, DC Jobs with Justice (DC JwJ) teamed up with CWA Locals in the DC-area in a show of solidarity. rn rnDC JwJ joined CWA Local 2108 and Local 2336 during the early rush hour commute holding signs along Route 29 in Maryland near two large Verizon work locations –Fairland Data Complex and Chesapeake complex. rsz_img__Jose.jpg Our message was clear and signs included the following: “Verizon CEO gets $23.1 million/year,” “We want a fair contract,” and “Where is the fairness?” Additionally, DC JwJ distributed balloons to CWA members as the arrived for work at the Chesapeake complex. resize_balloons.jpgCWA members tied the balloons to their cubicles in solidarity and observed a moment of silence at 10:30am marking the start of the shareholder meeting.rnrnLater that day, DC JwJ joined CWA members in leafleting and rallying at 17th and L in Washington, DC.
