Current Campaigns
These are some of the current campaigns that DC JwJ is working on:
Take Back DC: This week DC Jobs with Justice Launched the Take Back DC Coalition, a broad-based campaign led by labor and community groups working to protect public services for all District residents, strengthen transparency in the way the City does business and hold elected officials accountable by demanding an immediate halt to the privatization of public services and land, an impact-assessment of recently privatized services, honoring of union contracts and bargaining in good faith, a fair wage for all DC workers, specifically wage parity for cab drivers with other metropolitan areas.
Wage Theft Campaign Almost two thirds of day laborers and homeless workers in DC have experienced wage theft over the past year and yet. Workers are misclassified as contractors, refused pay for overtime work, paid below-minimum wage, paid less than agreed, paid with bad checks and sometimes, not paid at all. The process to reclaim wages through the DC’s Wage and Hour Office is long and the chances to get back stolen wages are low. In March the Union de Trabajadores de Washington, DC and DC JwJ launched a Wage Theft campaign to recover stolen wages for workers and reform the DC Office of Wage and Hour so it better meets the needs of contingent workers.
Hotel Worker Solidarity Campaign: DC JwJ has been helping to organize local efforts to support the demands of the hotelworkers at the Sheraton and Hilton Crystal City hotels in Northern Virginia. HEI Hotels and Resorts, owner of the Sheraton Crystal City, is one of the fastest growing hotel management companies in the US yet employees have experienced reduced hours and layoffs, shortages in cleaning supplies and basic materials, and increased workloads - especially in housekeeping. Now, HEI workers are fighting back with a demand for a fair and democratic process for deciding whether to form a union, without management interference. Justice at Wings campaign: DC JwJ is supporting a group of workers who are on strike against Wings Enterprises LLC, a construction company that places the reinforcing steel in the concrete structure of buildings and bridges. The striking "rodmen" are demanding living wages, benefits, and a respectful workplace, as well as workplace basics such as clean drinking water and basic safety equipment. The strike has become the foundation for the Justice at Wings campaign, which has involved the DC Student Labor Action Project, Interfaith Worker Justice of Greater Washington, and DC Workers' Rights Board in delegations and other actions to support the workers.
