Tom Frank will introduce Steven Ashby & C. J. Hawking at this event for their book Staley: The Fight for a New American Labor Movement, a gripping chronicle of a pivotal battle in the mid-1990s at the A. E. Staley corn processing plant in Decatur, Illinois, where workers waged one of the most hard-fought struggles in recent labor history. While the strike ultimately failed, Hawking and Ashby argue that tactics developed by the locked-out workers offer important lessons for today's labor movement. Jeremy Brecher calls it "[o]ne of the best accounts of a labor conflict ever written." Tom Frank (author of What's the Matter with Kansas and The Wrecking Crew and Wall Street Journal columnist) covered the Staley strike for the Chicago Reader.
